With the start of the Northern France Campaign on July 25th, 1944 came the end of Robert's duties. Over the next few days, the 4th Infantry Division continued to press on through France. Robert was most likely killed as his division pushed South past Marigny, France. His death was a result of shrapnel in his abdomen. When he died, he was carrying with him a lighter, a pencil, a knife, an insignia (most likely a cross), a wallet with photos, and 300 Francs. He was first buried at St. Mere Elise, France but was later moved to the Normandy American Cemetery at the time of its completion. Robert currently rests at Plot D, Row 25, Grave 7.
