Robert Morrison was born on September 21, 1914, to Andrew and Della Morrison. His parents were married at a relatively young age, 24 and 19 respectively, and had eleven children together: Archie (b.1911), Martha (b.1913), Robert (b.1914), Chester (b.1916), Anna (b. 1918), Edna (b. 1919), Roy (b. 1922), Mildred (b. 1927), Grant (b. 1929), Teddy (b. 1932), and Della (b. 1933). Robert lived on his parent's farm in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. His only education was grammar school which would be the equivalant of a middle school education. With the end of his education, he focused on tending to the family farm and became skilled in making shoes and boots.
Adult Life
Robert and Carolyn's first child, Robert Lee
Robert got married in his twenites to a Miss Carolyn Goodyear Killian (1915-living) and had three children: Robert Lee (b. 1934), Thersa Mae (b. 1939), and Donald Leroy (b. 1942). With his marriage, he moved out of his family's home and into a house on B Street, also in Carlisle. Robert soon found a job at the Bedford Shoe Company located in the area. Then on Novemeber 11th, 1943, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army at a center in Harrisburg, PA. His younger brother Roy enlisted with him the very same day.
Military Career
4th Infantry Division on Utah Beach, June 6th, 1944
After enlisting, Robert was placed in the 4th Infantry Division within the 8th Infantry Regiment. From Pennsylvania, he travelled to Fort McClellan, AL where he received his basic training. He was later stationed at Fort Meade, MD. His first journey overseas was in May of 1944, where he spent some time in England before heading for France. Robert's division was one of the first allied forces to land in France on D-Day. From that day on, Robert continued to make his way deeper and deeper into France in an attempt to overthrow the German command. On July 28th, he was killed in action, leaving behind his wife and three young children. His heroic actions during the war were rewarded posthumously with a Purple Heart.
